To
perform a spay, the animal is placed in a relaxed position on its
back. A small, midline, abdominal incision is made between the umbilicus
(belly button) and pelvis.
One of the ovaries is isolated. Once the blood vessels are tied
off to prevent bleeding, the ovary is removed from the abdomen.
Similarly the second ovary is removed.
Finally, after tying off the blood vessels to the uterus, the whole
anatomical structure including ovaries, uterine horns and the uterus
are removed through the abdominal incision. The body wall and the
skin are closed using sutures.
